The first thing that came to mind this morning was a completely useless but very persistent thought:
What if my main character just… refuses?
Not in a dramatic, destiny-defying, chosen-one kind of way. I mean full-on, arms-crossed, “nope” energy.
Like—
Prophecy shows up, glowing and ominous: “You are the one destined to—”
And she just goes, “I’m actually booked. Emotionally.”
I don’t know why that made me laugh, but now I can’t stop thinking about it.
Because we always write characters who rise to the moment. Who accepts the call? Who steps into the fire like it’s part of their job description. But what about the one who looks at the chaos, the danger, the ancient magical responsibility… and just deeply, sincerely does not want to be involved?
Not because she’s weak. Not because she’s incapable.
But because she has common sense.
Like, imagine her standing in the middle of a crumbling city, magic tearing through the sky, someone yelling, “We need you!”
And she’s like, “Have you tried… literally anyone else?”
And the worst part?
She still ends up doing it.
Reluctantly. Complaining the whole time. Mentally drafting a resignation letter to a fate she never applied for.
Honestly, I think that’s where I’m at with my stories right now.
Less “epic chosen one rises in power,”
more “deeply inconvenienced protagonist dragged into nonsense against her will.”
And somehow… that feels a lot more real.
